Horikoshi has detailed backstories for even the most minor of characters and that really fleshes out the sort of world out protagonists live in. The in between pages have gone from character commentary to commentary on just about everything. I still think hardcore Bakugo lovers enjoy seeing him as a child though so it’s not really a downside. It’s fairly similar to Midoriya’s except that he’s always had a powerful quirk so there’s really not a lot of drama to speak of in his past.
Unfortunately, Bakugo’s origin is no where near as exciting. This volume serves as Bakugo’s origin the way that the fifth volume served as Todoroki’s.
It feels like it could probably fit in one volume which makes it feel awkwardly split into two separate volumes right as it begins. They’re both relatively short arcs, but the Final Exams arc especially. Hero Killer arc ends and the Final Exams arc starts.
It makes the story in the volume a little less cohesive. I’m always a little upset when a volume happens sort of between two big arcs. Stain has some very particular ideas about heroes and their place in society-and he means to purge every hero he can find! Even though he’s not ready, when the League of Villains attacks in the town of Hosu, Midoriya rushes to help Ida, who is engaged in a life-or-death struggle with Hero Killer Stain. Midoriya has learned a few tricks from Gran Torino, but some things just have to be experienced to be understood. What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called “Quirks”? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? The Hero Academy of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?
